In America and Canada today, it is estimated that over 90% of pipe used for gas applications are plastic.  Of that, well over 99% is HDPE.  Why is there such a unanimous use of this material?  For starters, HDPE is extremely lightweight and flexible so it works in a variety of conditions. It can come in coils which minimize the number of joints needed in the entire system.  PE pipe is joined together using mechanical fittings, thermal fusion, or even electro-fusion, all of which create an air-tight seal.  PE also has an extremely high resistance to harsh conditions such as cold temperatures, abrasion, bending, internal pressure, point loading, and squeeze-off.
